Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
