Learn to Play Craps – Hints and Techniques: The History of Craps
Be clever, play smart, and pickup craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
