Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
