Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
