Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
