Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
