Learn to Play Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play cunning, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
