Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
