Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
