Pickup Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
