Master Craps – Tricks and Strategies: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
