Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Past of Craps
Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
