Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
