Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
