Learn to Play Craps – Hints and Schemes: The Past of Craps
Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
