Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
