Learn to Play Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Past of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
