Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
