Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
