Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
