Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
