Master Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
