Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win.
