Pickup Craps – Tips and Tactics: The History of Craps
Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
